Ethiopia: Export Earnings and Performance Decline

9 months report of Ethiopia’s export takes further decline both in meeting targets and comparison to last fiscal year’s performance. The report, which is expected to be presented to the House of Peoples’ Representative (HPR) by the Ministry of Trade (MoT), reveals export earnings from agriculture, manufacturing and mining sectors have declined.

In the first 9 months of the current fiscal year Ethiopia earned 2.05 billion USD, which is only 70.4 percent of the target 2.91 billion USD.

The report further explains the target was a revised target. If the assessments were made as per the original targets set under the Second Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP II), the performance rate would be much lower.

According to The Reporter, the export targets set on the GTP II for the current fiscal year is 5 billion USD, and when the 9 month performance is compared to this target it is clearly below half of the expected amount.

The overall export performance when compared to last fiscal year’s achievements, it is 6 percent lower.
