Ethiopia and Samsung to Collaborate Against Counterfeit Products

The Samsung conglomerate announced plans, on Thursday, to collaborate with the Ethiopian Revenue and Customs Authority (ERCA) to halt the import of counterfeit products into the country. The South Korean Corporation is particularly interested in eliminating counterfeit products in the mobile phones sector.

Samsung plans to address the problem of counterfeit products gaining access to the African market according to Jong Oh Lee, Samsung East Africa Regional Market Director. The ‘gray’ or counterfeit products are particularly a problem in the mobile phone sector he said at a press conference at the opening of the Samsung Ethiopia Week.

The Conglomerate will scale up it’s determination to stop the infiltration of counterfeit products parallel to the market development effort that is on its agenda said Lee.

Speaking at the event held at the Hilton Hotel the Managing Director explained Samsung’s plan to work in close collaboration with ERCA and other concerned parties. Samsung, with other stakeholders like ERCA, will build a database to eliminate the import of counterfeit products, especially in the mobile phone sector explained Lee.  

Samsung is an important presence in the international technology industry. The conglomerate has a significant share in the African Market and has launched the “Built for Africa” campaign to promote its products to the regional market.

The Samsung Ethiopia Week is part of the ‘Built for Africa’ campaign. This event is designed to highlight the features that make Samsung products uniquely fit for Africa and is expected to be well attended.
