Ethiopia: New Directive on Cash Register Disposal

New directive has been issued by Ethiopian Revenue and Customs Authority (ERCA) regarding cash register disposal. The directive is promulgated to ease Ethiopia’s businesses dissatisfaction on the issue.

Commenting on the development Yohannes Gizaw, Tax Information Director at ERCA, said the new directive gave 3 options to businesses when disposing their cash registers. The options are; selling the machine to a third party or selling it to a dealer or submit the machine to ERCA so that it can be destroyed.

ERCA has devised a mechanism which fills operating system gaps during the disposal of the cash register machine, Yohannes added. He also explained the Authority intended to manufacture the machine here in Ethiopia in the long run.

According to the Director the Authority has already commenced implementing the directive after discussing it with stakeholders.

The previous system, according to Walta Information Center, obliged businesses to submit the cash register machine at a dealer and pay 250 Birr per month when businesses are closed.
