Oromia State, Ethiopia, revoked licenses given to 218 investors and association which are accused of undertaking illegal mining practices.
According to Deputy Head of Oromia Water, Mines and Energy Bureau, Jarso Edema, the licenses were revoked because the investors failed to implement projects properly, engaged in illegal trade, tax evasion and other related unlawful activities. Individuals caught operating without acquiring license were also brought to justice, he added.
Following this, 14,000 metric tons of minerals were confiscated, according to the Deputy Head.
The bureau also issued warning to more than 400 investors, Jarso explained. In addition to this, 86 middlemen are caught and accused of the malpractice.
Currently there are more than 6000 investors and associations engaged in the mining sector of Oromia.
