Ethiopian Railways Corporation (ERC) has begun printing cards to be used for the Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit (AART) to commence using electronic cards.

According to Dereje Tefera, ERC’s Communication Head, the electronic tickets are being introduced to avoid cheating and to deal with the queue and crowd. The new system would start soon, he furthered.

The delay in introducing the electronic ticket system came following problems on printing and procurement of ticket reader machines, the head explained.

The AART covers 34 kilometers and it was built at a cost of 475 million USD. Currently its carrying capacity is 130,000 people and it provides service for 3.9 million passengers every month.
