Ethiopia to Export Potash in 4 Years

Ministry of Mines, Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoMPG) announced Ethiopia would provide potash for the international market in the coming 4 years.

According to Tolosa Shagi, Minister for MoMPG, currently there are three international companies that have requested for license to develop potash in Afar State.

The potash deposit around Dalol, which is in Afar State, is said to be more than 100 million tons. This makes Ethiopia the third largest country in the world with regard to potash deposit.

Tolosa explained, Allana Potash was licensed to develop potash in Afar but it transferred its license to Israeli Chemical Ltd (ICL) stating financial constraint as its reason. Circum Minerals Ltd and Yara international are undertaking broad activities to export potash, the Minister furthered.

In the aim of establishing potash fertilizer factory, investors are eyeing towards Ethiopia, Tolosa noted.
