In the aim of expanding the implementation of public-private partnerships (PPP), Ethiopia’s government is drafting a legal as well as policy framework.
Abdulaziz Mohammed, Minister for Finance and Economic Cooperation, during presenting six months report to the parliament, indicated that PPP would be a core strategy for development during the second Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP II). “The contribution of the private sector is an option to expand the finance base and meet capital demands of government led developmental projects,” he furthered.
According to the Minister, the Ministry has prioritized expanding role of the private sector during the GTP II. Government strategies which outline ways to work with the private sector is drafted and will be tabled for comments within months, he added.
Focus on PPP has lately increased following the government’s aim to draft a strategy to develop industrial zones and parks in collaboration with the private sector. In order to achieve this, the government has established Industry Zones Deployment Corporation, under Ministry of Industry.
