Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC) announced that it had begun assembling cargo locomotives for the new Ethiopia-Djibouti railway line which is at its final phase to commence operation, Fana Broadcasting Corporate reported.
General Manager of the Industry, Major Gebre-Egziabher Tsegaye, stated that the corporation had begun assembling the locomotive in its branch, Dire Dewa locomotive sub-industry.
The General Manager added that METEC is currently assembling freight locomotives each with 700 quintals weight carrying capacity around 6 per a single day to attain the target set to save foreign exchange spending.
The Corporation had received 100 hectares of land from Dire Dewa City Administration to build a factory which is to be completed in 18 months. This factory will enable to locally manufacture and fully substitute externally manufactured locomotives and hopefully export locomotives after meeting local demands.
