AfDB Approves Loan for Water Supply, Sanitation Projects in Ethiopia

afdb2The Development Bank Group (AfDB) on January 13, 2016, has approved a loan worth USD 76.11 million from the AfDB financing window for the implementation of Four Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Improvement Program in Ethiopia.

Adama in Oromia, Adwa in Tigray, Bichena in Amhara and Gode in Somali Regional States are the Four Program beneficiary towns.

The program intends to improve the health and socio-economic development of the four town residents via increased access to sustainable water supply and sanitation services and improvement in service delivery.

The estimated aggregate average water supply and sanitation access in the towns is 53 and 76 percent respectively. Thus, the program targets to raise both to 100 percent by 2020, benefiting 635,000 residents of the towns and approximately 227,000 people in other nearby villages, towns and rural population indirectly.

Increased water production capacities, improvement in distribution systems, provision of public latrines, improvement in collection and disposal of faecal sludge and capacity development of the regional water bureaus and utilities are the aim of the project.

The program will be executed within the framework of the One WaSh National Program (OWNP).

The project will take 48 months to complete and it will be implemented by Water Resources Development Fund (WRDF) with the Regional Water Bureaus.
