Ethiopian Sugar Corporation announced Omo Kuraz I sugar factory found in southern region of Ethiopia will commence first phase of sugar production in February 2016.
According to the Corporation, the factory has 72,000 tons of annual sugar production capacity.
The Omo Kuraz project incorporates five sugar factories and it is part of the 10 sugar factories planned to be constructed across Ethiopia in the coming five years.
In an exclusive interview with Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) Communications Director at the Corporation Zemedkun Tekle said Ethiopian government is planning to raise the country’s total sugar production capacity to 3.9 million tons by the end of GTP II period with plans USD 1.2 billion revenue from export.
Tendaho and Kessem sugar factories, which are under construction in the state of Afar, have already begun production on trial basis. They will have an annual production capacity of 150,000 and 110,000 tons of sugar respectively when they begin full operation.
