Fiche Chamballala, New Year of the Sidama people of Ethiopia, has been registered as UNESCO’s Intangible World Heritage, Fana Broadcasting Corporate reported.
Fiche was one of the 23 elements inscribed out of a total of 35 that were proposed at the 10th session of the committee for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage meeting in Windhoek, Namibia.
Next to Meskel festival, the finding of the True Cross, Fiche Chamballala is Ethiopia’s second Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity to be registered by UNESCO.
To register Ethiopian intangible cultural heritages under UNESCO list, efforts have been made since 2012, according to Desalegn Abebaw, Director of Cultural Heritage Research at the Authority and Conservation of Cultural Heritage.
He also noted that Ethiopia has already submitted the study findings of three intangible cultural heritages to UNESCO for registration, including the Gada system, one of Oromo people’s unique culture.
