NRECA to Devise Strategy Plan for Electricity Access in Ethiopia

NRECA International has concluded a USD 200,000 agreement with the World Bank to draft a strategy on the expansion of electricity access for millions in Ethiopia.

NRECA team in Addis Ababa has already started the work in October on the Ethiopia National Electrification Strategy. The strategy will help support rural economic growth through expansion of access to electricity in the country’s rural, remote and “peri-urban” areas.

Enhancing Ethiopia’s electric infrastructure is part of the country’s Growth and Transformation Plan.

NRECA officials will deliberate together with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity and other energy-related agencies to develop the strategy for electricity in Ethiopia.

Dan Waddle, NRECA International senior vice President, said the team will study Ethiopia’s energy sector and present “strategic alternatives to improve the efficacy of the ongoing investment program in rural electric infrastructure forward.”

Out of 65 million businesses and Ethiopian households, two out of three people are in short of access to reliable electricity.

This is NRECA International’s first project in Ethiopia, Waddle said.
