The Addis Ababa City Administration’s Trade Bureau has warned live animal traders in Addis Ababa to comply with the new live animal trading regulation, which came in to force on Friday August 14, 2015.
The Administration said it will take legal actions against violations, in addition to revoking licenses.
Gemechis Melaku, Deputy Head of the Trade Bureau, told Capital the new trading system is applicable in three trading centers, yet this does not include small animal trade (goats and sheep) centers.
The proclamation stipulates different degrees of punishment levels from fines to imprisonment for those who trespasses of the new cattle marketing law.
The new arrangement is expected to increase the city government’s revenue from live animals market.
The new system requires traders to have valid business licenses to sell live animals. It also requires sellers to provide receipts to their customers.
The City’s Trade Bureau is working to modernize Cattle Trading Centers located in five sub-cities in Addis Ababa.
