Ethiopia: MoA to Establish Coffee, Tea Authority

Coffee and Tea Development and Trade Authority is going to be established to advance Ethiopia’s benefit from the sector, according to the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA).

Fikru Amenu Coffee, Tea and Spices Directorate at the Ministry told Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) on August 14, 2015, the establishment of the authority is targeted at making Ethiopia’s coffee and tea products competent in the global market.

He said the authority will be accountable for promoting Ethiopia’s coffee and tea products as well as enabling farmers to earn better prices.

The authority is also entrusted with expanding the size of the land to be covered by coffee trees to a million hectare from 700,000 hectare and to increase the income to 2 billion US dollars by 2020, Fikru added.

The authority will begin operation after the ratification of the draft regulation by the Council of Ministers, he furthered.

The authority is expected to be launched this Ethiopian fiscal year.
