Ethiopia to Launch New Rural Electrification Program in the Coming Fiscal Year

The Ministry of Water Irrigation and Energy (MoWIE) said Ethiopia is to launch new rural electrification program as part of Climate Resilient Green Economy plans.

The Rural Electrification Fund Office (RE) stated that it plans to purchase and distribute 4,404 solar home systems (SHS) and institutional solar systems in 2015/16. It also said it has plans for the purchase and distribution of 200,000 SHS and 600,000 improved cooking stoves for the next five years.

According to MoWIE’s Alternative Energy Technology Development and Transformation Directorate, the program works with different donor organizations to hand over the SHS and institutional solar systems to parts of Ethiopia that are not connected with the national grid system.
