Ethiopia: MoTr, INSA Introduces New Fleet Management System

Ministry of Transport (MoTr) in association with the Information Network Security Agency (INSA) and Ethiopian Revenue and Customs Authority (ERCA) is introducing a fleet management system to monitor and control trucks going out and arriving in Ethiopia.

The system will principally be implemented in fleet vehicles that transport freight on the Ethiopia-Djibouti corridor. INSA developed the application that uses General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and the hardware will be imported.

Asalefw Ahmedin, Communication Director of MoTr, said, the system is intended for the control of theft on freight trucks.

“We have already started implementing the system in coordination with Federal Transport Authority (FTA),” added Asalefew. “We are working to implement it in 4,000 trucks by the first weeks of August.”

Abelneh Agidew, Communication Director of FTA, said, currently, the Authority is promoting the technology to five transport companies.

The application developed by INSA can be accessed through mobile phones and tablets of individual transporters. Meanwhile, transport companies that have IT department can manage it through servers, according to Zelalem Teferi, IT expert and Project Head at INSA.
