Ethiopia: ERA says it constructs 57 thousand KM Road in the GTP period

Addis Ababa, 19 June (WIC) – The Ethiopian Roads Authority says it has constructed 57 thousand kilometers of roads in the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) period showing about 98 percent achievement.

The national road coverage was 48,000 km in the beginning of the GTP period that has grown to 105,000 km.

In his exclusive interview with WIC, Communication Directorate Director of the Authority, Samson Wondimu said that over 70 projects are finalized and 60 new projects have started to be constructed.

According to the director, over 105.2 billion EB is invested to these projects out of which 78 per cent of the cost was covered by the Ethiopian government.

The Authority has faced challenges in border demarcation, incapable contractors, shortage of finance, lack of skilled manpower and machineries, Samson said adding that awareness creation works, capacity building trainings and other activities will be strengthened to tackle the c problems.
