Ethiopia, Sudan Agree to Establish Free Trade Zones

Ethiopia and Sudan concluded an agreement to establish free trade zones, Sudan’s State Finance Minister, Abdel-Rahman Dirar said.

In his address prior to the joint Sudanese-Ethiopian technical committee in Khartoum on Sunday, June 14, 2015, Dirar stated the Ethiopian side has agreed to proposals offered by Sudan to address problems investors face from both countries alongside establishing free trade zones.

Consulting firms would determine those zones and present them to the joint technical committee in 45 days, he continued on saying.

He added the committee; following the review of the feasibility studies provided by the firms would approve the requirements for establishing the trade zones. He noted that currencies recognized by both countries will be used in the free zones.

Currently, both countries have an ongoing projects targeted to join their borders with roads and railways besides energy linkages.
