Ethiopia: FMHACA to Adopt New Food Compliance Certification Directive

Food, Medicine and Health Care Administration and Control Authority (FMHACA) is preparing a new directive that compels food processing companies to secure competency certification from the authority before they release their products to the market.

The authority used to issue competency certificate only for infant formula and food supplements, but now edible oil, milk, fish, fortified flour, egg, meat, fruits and vegetables processors need to obtain the certificate before they present these to the market.

The directive will be enforced in the coming Ethiopian year. The requirement also compels food additive producers to get certified.

Tewodros Girma, FMHACA Food Licensing Director told Capital the mandatory certificate is important to ensure the safety and quality of food products.
