Transport Bureau Spending 10m Birr to Monitor City Traffic

Addis Ababa Transport Bureau (AATB) is to purchase vehicles, radars, cameras, alcohol testers, speed controllers and loud speakers worth Birr ten million for mobile monitoring of the city’s traffic flow, according to Addis Fortune.

Few numbers of traffic officers, reluctance of drivers and pedestrians to respect the law are major factors contributing to the challenges of the city’s traffic, according to Mohammed Nuru, Bureau’s Traffic Management team coordinator.

“The new initiative is to monitor vehicle and traffic flow in the city moving from place to place,” he said.

Traffic accidents in Ethiopia account for the deaths of 37.28 persons per 100,000 persons, according to the report of World Health Organization of April 2014. This figure places Ethiopia 12th in the world in traffic-related death.

“The major focus of all the control is to minimize road accidents and traffic jams by unnecessary parking so as to facilitate mobility,” says Mohammed.

As soon as procurement is completed, purchasing takes place in this budget year, it was learnt.
