Arjo-Didessa Sugar Factory has started operation this month, Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported.
Factory’s Public Relations Senior Officer, Mulugeta Fantahun told ENA the project has cultivated sugarcane on 1,666 hectares of land.
The factory has a capacity to crush 8,000 tons of sugarcane per day, Mulugeta added.
This factory which gets water from Didessa River is currently constructing a dam on the river following increasing demand with the expansion of its farm.
Arjo-Didessa Sugar Development Project which was previously known as Al-Habesha Factory PLC was established in 2009 by Pakistani investors. However, the Ethiopian government acquired the factory when the project stalled.
Currently, the project has 800 permanent and 1,000 temporary workers.
