Spur Corporation, a South African multi-brand restaurant franchiser, has joined with Cucina Trading PLC, a newly established local firm, in a franchising contract to open a chain of specialty restaurants in Addis Ababa.

The signing event has taken place at Hilton hotel, The Reporter Ethiopia reported.

According to the contract, Cucina plans to open seven specialized restaurants in seven years. The first restaurant under the franchising brand of Spur Steak Ranches will be opened in six months, said Mulugeta Demissie, general manager of Cucina Trading PLC.

“And within a year, Panarottis Pasta Pizza will follow suit with a distinctive brand,” Mulugeta said. “After assessing the success of these two restaurants, The Hussar Grill restaurant, specializing in beef foods is expected to be operational ,” he added.

“It has taken a good four years to find a potential investor like Cucina Trading PLC so that a globally recognized chain of restaurants to operate in Ethiopia,” Pierre Van Tonder, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Spur Corporation, told The Reporter.

Besides franchising its brand, Spur has agreed to extend trainings and managerial support. It will receive five percent share of the total revenue earned by Cucina, according to Tonder.

Spur Corporation runs 506 outlets worldwide out of which 318 Spur Steak Ranches, 79 Panarottis Pizza Pasta, eight Hussar Grill restaurants and many others that make up the Spur families.

Cucina Trading PLC is a sister company to Great Abyssinia Company and Noah Real Estate.
