World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) was celebrated by the Ethiopian Trade Competition and Consumers Protection Authority intending to promote the obligatory rights of all consumers, who are at liberty to claim the respect and protection of their rights to regulate the abuses and injustices that consumers are compelled to face, Ethiopian Herald reported.
Melkamu Zeleke, Authority Director General, on the event said,” we are celebrating this day to create awareness among consumers regarding their rights and exercise them legally. Consumers must be conscious on the rights they have: right to safety, be informed, choose, be heard and to claim the satisfaction of their basic needs in addition to receiving redress for any wrongs they suffer”.
The Authority had been trying its best to promote the rights of consumers and put them in to action by the business sector and the consumers themselves, Melkamu noted.
The Authority is discharging its responsibility to create awareness in society by organizing events and disseminating valuable information concerning the consumers in the market via different channels like the electronic media, print media including face to face meetings.
The day was celebrated under the theme “Healthy diets to consumers”.
“We still observe many goods and services which do not meet minimum standard circulating in the market. Information on such account could be communicated to our Authority through our free line 8478”, according to Melkamu.
World Consumer Rights Day was celebrated for the 32nd time internationally and for the second time at the national level.
