Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority’s (ECAA) working procedures are going to be audited by the UN organ, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), from Monday, April 20 to Wednesday, April 29, 2015.
According to ECAA Communication and Public Relations Service Director, Debasu Bayleyegn, ICAO is going to inspect and certify the Authority for the purpose of ensuring ECAA renders safe and reliable air transport service in Ethiopia.
Back in 2004 ICAO audited the Authority where the latter scored 67 percent, which is above the world average 60 percent.
The authority expects to score 80 to 90 percent in the audit, Debasu explained.
Airlines that do not qualify the audit will not be allowed to carry out international flights. Not qualifying is said to hurt the existence of national flag carriers. In addition to the flag carriers, private operators will also not be allowed to fly to other countries.
According to Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), ECAA made purchase of and also installed modern flight instruments such as radar and Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) at the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. The technology is said to reduce the time of landing and taking off from seven minutes to three.
ICAO is a UN body and its task is to monitor the global aviation industry, inspect the regulatory body of the aviation sector in countries and the certification process and the air navigation service.
The Organization was established in 1994 under the Chicago Convention and Ethiopia was one of the founding members.
