Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) provided three salt producing areas in Ethiopia salt iodizing machines.
GAIN supplied six machines which it bought from South Africa. The machineries are Davey brands and are supplied to Godusbo, Afdera and Shewit areas which are in the regions of Somali, Afar and Tigray.
Among these areas 80 percent of Ethiopia’s salt requirement is met from Afdera’s production. “The reason is that Afdera and Godusboo are major producers of salt in the county and we wanted to demonstrate best practices in these areas,” said Alem Abay, Country Manager, GAIN Ethiopia.
Ethiopia requires salt suppliers to iodize their salt by virtue of Proclamation No. 204/2003. The national supply currently lies at 300,000 quintals and 80 percent of this is iodized.
