Ethiopia: Tendaho Project 90 Percent Complete

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy disclosed Tendaho irrigation development and dam project is 93 percent of completed.

Upon completion the dam is going to have the capacity of storing 1.8 billion cubic meter water. It will also enable to develop 60,000 hectares of land, Public Relations Directorate Director at the Ministry, Bizuneh Tolcha, said.

The director added Kesem, Megech, Rebe, Koga and Gidabo irrigation dam projects are also at various progress stages, ranging from 26 to 88 percent completion rate.

Upon commencing service, these dams will store over 4.8 billion cubic meter of water and they will enhance to develop more than 200,000 hectares of land, he added.The projects created job opportunity for over 5,000 citizens.

According to Bizuneh Ethiopia has a potential of over 5.3 million hectares irrigable land. Nonetheless, the area of lad developed by irrigation up until 2006 (Ethiopian Calendar) was only 300,000 hectares.
