Ethiopia: Study on Modjo- Hawassa Expressway Completed

Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) completed the study it conducted for the 220 Kilometers Modjo – Hawassa Expressway on the environmental and social impacts as well as Resettlement Action Plan.

The civil work is going to be financed by the Federal government and four other financiers. The four other financiers are the African Development Bank, World Bank and two export import banks, Chinese and Korean export import Banks.

The idea of constructing the express way came because different reasons. One is high traffic in the area which is beyond the current capacity of the road. Pollution that is created by the traffic is also another reason. Frequent car accidents on the current road and failure to accommodate the traffic flow are the other reasons.

The study and design of the express way is conducted by Techniplan International Consulting while the study is to be further inspected by Ethio-infra Engineering PLC.

The new road is going to be part of Ethiopia’s contribution to the 10,000 Kilometers Cairo – Gaborone - Cape Town highway.
