Ethiopia: Addis to Clear 134.78 Hectares of Land

Starting from the current fiscal year Addis Ababa City Administration will be clearing 134.78 hectares land upon which slums have been built on.

The 23.78 hectares is in addition to the 111 hectare that has been set aside for demolition by the Housing Development & Urban Renewal Agency (HDURA).

Out of the aggregate area that is set aside for demolition 65 percent, 88 hectare, is going to be cleared during the current fiscal year.

According to Fortune, the additional areas that will be demolished for redevelopment are found in Addis Ketema and Lideta sub cities. The decision came after an official visit was paid to the areas and it was found that the initial plan had left small pocket slums, Communication head at HDURA, Markos Alemayehu, explained.

On his part Addis Ketema Land Development and Management Office head, Hailu Tekliu, said, “We received the announcement from the city administration this week”. He furthered the district will clear all households that are within the demarcated areas as per the city administration plan.

Prior to the adjustment made for the sub city, there were 1,200 registered households in the area that was slated for demolition.

The total area that will be demolished in the Addis Ketema Sub City is 29.18 hectare. On the other hand areas that are slated in Arada, Kirkos and Lideta are 21.2 hectares, 26.4 hectares and 58 hectares respectively.

After clearing these areas, the plot of lands are going to be codified and recorded by land bank then availed for lease.
