Ethiopia: Garages in Addis Allowed to Renew License without Complying Standards

Garages in the capital of Ethiopia got a go-ahead from Addis Abba City Bureau (AACTB) to renew their license without complying with the standards Federal Transport Authority (FTA) set back in 2012.

The standards were introduced by the Authority in order to prevent loss of life and property that is caused by poor maintenance and also modernize the way vehicles are repaired and maintained. The document which stipulates the standards has 27 basic standards and three main subdivisions.

The three subdivisions are human resource, tools and working areas. The document states garages will be rated after being evaluated based on the three subdivisions.

Nonetheless, the preconditions set by the document have been source of controversy between garages operating in Addis Ababa and AACTB. The document is primarily criticized for its unrealistic presence.

For the past three months Arada district garage owner’s association was in discussion with AACTB making their disputed issue giving more time for garages to comply with the rules.

“After analyzing all this limitation we let them to renew their license,” said Wegayehu Assefa, transport operation head at AACTB.Garages can only renew their license if they secure permission from AACTB, which is the regulatory body of standardization gave the permission.
