Ethiopia: Travel Bans to Middle East to Be Lifted

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Labor and social Affairs (MLSA) announced it will lift the travel ban it has lay on domestic workers who make a journey to the Middle East.

The ban was imposed two years ago on October 2012 and followed by banning work permits of agencies that facilitate travel for work and other destinations popular for overseas employment.

Abdulfetah Abdulahi Hassen, Minister for Labor and Social Affairs, on Thursday speaking to the House of People Representatives (HPR), said the Government came to the decision after concluding bilateral agreements on the safety of citizens with the Governments of Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan.

He furthered told the MPs that the government has dictated trainings as well as proper education for domestic workers who intend to make the trek to the Middle East.

Nonetheless, the Minister refrained from stating the precise time when the ban will be lifted.

According to The Reporter, the ban was introduced following repeated reports of countless Ethiopian lost their lives and went under untold physical and psychological trauma due to illegal human trafficking.

The newspaper further explained the decision to ban the trek was intended to safeguard the wellbeing of the citizens, and was effective until a lasting solution was found to the problem.
