Gibe III hydropower dam, which is being built on the Omo River, has reached a completion rate of 88 percent. The announcement was made by Ethiopia Electric Power (EEP).
Once the hydropower’s dam is completed, its ten 187 Megawatt turbine units will take the Ethiopia’s energy coverage to 94 percent.
Two of the hydropower’s units are scheduled to begin generating electricity by Spring 2015.
In related developments, other projects are progressing well and expansion work on other existing dams such as Tekeze and Gilgel Gibe II is taking place.
Even if Ethiopia has the capacity of generating 45,000 Megawatts from its hydropower resource, it has only developed 2,268 Megawatts thus far.
