Ethiopia’s First Sugarcane Crushing Machine Being Built

Ethiopia’s first sugar crushing machine is being manufactured by KG Engineering PLC at a 5.6 Million Birr contract.

The crushing machine is being built for the Sugar Corporation. According to KG’s Manager and owner, Kahsay Gebreegziabher, the contract was initially given to Hibret Manufacturing & Machine Building Industry (HMMBI), a subsidiary of the Metals & Engineering Corporation (MetEC). Hibert passed the contract to KG, Kahsay explained.

The machine is expected to be installed to one of the sugar factories the Corporation is constructing.

According to KG’s Mechanical Engineer, Mensur Ahmed, the machine being built includes one cardinal and one pusher drum, which has a feeder table chain that crushes the sugar cane and transfer it to the main grinding machine. The feeder chains are conveyers, which transport the canes to the larger grinder.

Mensur further explained the feeder chain is going to be 400 Meters along and it will have 18,000 plates attached together. According to him, both the pusher and cardinal drums will have five meters height. “All of them are to be made of steel plates called C45, which the HMMBI supplies,” Mensur added.

The 35tn pusher drum will stand at the front of the machines and receive the crude cane which will crush it into smaller parts and push the chains to take the cane to the next machine.

KG’s Manager noted the machine used to be imported and that his manufacturing is the first to build It locally.

KG was established in 1986 and it has been manufacturing construction equipments, truck bodies, fuel tankers, sheet metal bending and cutting machines and water tankers. In addition to these products, KG started manufacturing industrial cranes in collaboration with the Italian firm, Lucernini.
