Ethiopia: Addis Looking for Sponsorship to Bus and Taxi Stop Shelters

Addis Ababa City Transport Bureau (AACTB) is searching for private companies that will build 354 passenger shelters at public transport stop points. The shelters are going to be built in Addis and its neighboring towns.

The design work for the shelters was done by students and lecturers at the Addis Ababa University Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EiABC). The contract was awarded to the Institute following a competitive bid and the EiABC delivered the design a month ago.

AACTB initially planned to construct the shelters at its own cost and more money from the city administration. According to Fortune, the Bureau submitted a request for funding from the city Administration. Nonetheless, plans changed after a while.

Bureau’s Communication Sub Process Head, Genet Dibaba, noted the designers were notified two weeks ago to find sponsors to construct the shelters on their own and deliver to the Bureau, with the designers to get commission from the advertising fee the sponsors pay to the Bureau.

Genet further noted, Megenagna, Merkato and La Gare will get priority because they experience a high flow of public transport users and have many stops. She added 208 of the shelters are reserved for Addis Ababa City Bus and the rest 146 are going to be distributed to taxi and midi-bus stop points.
