Indian Company to Grow Food Crops in Ethiopia

Karuturi Global is planning to produce rice, maize and soybeans over 20,000 hectares of land in Ethiopia.

Karuturi, founder and managing director of the company, said that the 20,000 hectares of plantation would come up in the Oromia and Gambella regional states.

According to Karuturi, the 20,000 hectares of land is part of 100,000 hectares the company has leased from the government in 2009.

He said that the company had also planted a variety of crops like rice, maize and sugarcane in other regions of Ethiopia, besides planting roses on many farms.

The company is expecting a harvest of maize and rice on 10,000 hectares by September. It is also palm oil trees on 5,000 hectares.

When the production of palm plantations peaks, Karuturi Global expects to produce 100,000 tonnes of palm oil which will be sold in the local market.

Then, the company leased a farm at Wolisso, 90 km from Addis Ababa. It has two flower farms in Holeta in the Oromia Regional State where it produces roses for markets in Europe, especially Germany. And in the Gambella Regional State, Karuturi Global has planted sugarcane on 15,000 hectares of land.

Karuturi came to Ethiopia in 2004 through a 100-percent subsidiary named Ethiopian Meadows Plc.
