Ethiopia Secured U.S $ 245 Million from Horticulture Export

Ethiopian Horticulture Development Agency disclosed Ethiopia secured U.S $ 245 Million during the past budget year from the export of flowers, vegetables and fruits.

According to the Director General of the Agency, Alem Woldegerima, out of the total revenue U.S $ 199.74 Million was generated from flowers while vegetables and fruits take a share of U.S $ 40 Million and U.S $ 6 Million respectively.

Alem furthered the performance of the just ended fiscal year has exceeded the year before it by 6.4 percent.

Ethiopia’s export flowers main destination is Europe, the Director General noted. He added major consumers of the flowers are Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Norway. Other than these countries, Ethiopia’s flowers also hit the markets of Saudi Arabia, Japan and the United States.

He furthered importers of Ethiopia’s fruits and vegetables are Somalia and Djibouti.

According to the Director General, at present vast land is covered by horticulture. He further noted foreign investors are investing in the sector, out of which majority of them are from Israel, India, Belgium and Kuwait.
