Ethiopia: Addis Ababa’s Trade and Industry Bureau to Split

addis ababaThe Addis Ababa City Administration Cabinet decided to break down Trade and Industry Bureau (TIB) of the city into two distinct organs, one specializing in the city’s trade administration and the other in management of the city’s industry & investment. 

According to Tesfaye Chaka, Head of the Study, Plan and Budget Department at TIB, this was first discussed between the nine States’ trade and industry bureaus and the two city administrations during a forum in 2012/2013.

The meeting was concluded by a consensus to establish a separate bureau to handle industry related matters of Addis Ababa and Oromia State. The meeting suggested a similar structure as the Federal one for Addis Ababa and the Oromia State.

Tesfaye noted the Study Plan and Budget Department of TIB has organized a team of experts from different agencies of the city administration who studied ways on how to break the bureau into two and the detailed organizational structure.

The study was submitted it’s suggestion along with it’s findings to the city cabinet. According to Berhanu Tegegn, special assistant to the Bureau’s head, the proposal is approved by the city cabinet. 

Investment Agency is expected to be transfer under the Industry Bureau. Tesfaye commented on this saying, the process is intended to increase the attention given to the manufacturing sector.

According to Berhanu the two bureaus are expected to start operation on September 2014.
