The construction of Omo-Kuraz I sugar factory is 80 percent complete and it is expected to go fully operational in the coming Ethiopian year, Ethiopian News Agency reported.

The factory is built in the Southern Nations Nationalities State and is the first of the seven factories to be built in South Omo Zone of the State.

When the factory goes fully operational, it will have the capacity to crush 12,000 tons of sugarcane in a single day.

According to the Factory General Manager, Nuredin Asaro, related works such as diversion of the Omo River, construction of irrigation schemes and building of residential house for employees is being undertaken. In addition to this, sugarcane plantation is being developed on 5,000 hectares of land.

With regard to the construction of the main dam, diversion of the Omo River has been carried out in a bid to construct the dam.

According to the Ethiopian News Agency the construction of the factory has helped the surrounding communities with construction of infrastructure and educational institution.
