Ethiopia: Koshe Park Project Awarded to Universal Consulting Architect

An award ceremony was held by Horn of Africa Regional Environment Center and Network (HoA-REC&N) in Ethiopia for the “park architecture and landscape design completion” of the Koshe area rehabilitation project. The project is a joint project between the Addis Ababa City Administration and HOA-REC&N.

There were nine companies that submitted proposals but it was Universal Consulting Architect that finally was awarded the project.

Universal is expected to build a park that includes sport field, scientific park, drive-in cinema, conference centers, children’s playground and more.

The Koshe area is well known for being Addis Ababa’s open waste dumping site for the past 40 and more years. Even if the site was first considered to be on the outskirt of the city, it is now engulfed into part of the city where there are schools, residence neighborhoods and other facilities.

Koshe has posed a serious health and environment hazards for the community that leaves around it. It was this that led the Addis Ababa City Administration to close the Koshe site and relocate the city’s dumping site to Sendafa. The Sendafa site is currently under construction and it is 50 kilometers away from Addis.

HOA-REC&N is an organization that has been closely working with the City Administration and it has taken responsibility to supervise and monitor closure and methane capturing activities at the Koshe project site.
