Ethiopia: Jimma Town Gets New Airport

A new airport was built in Jimma Town by the Ethiopian Airports Enterprise, The Reporter reported The airport was built at a cost of 490 Million Birr and named after Jimma’s prominent leader Abba JIffar.

The new airport lies next to the old Jimma Airport and covers a total area of 4665.76. The airport is accommodated with a 4 Km long and 60 meters wide runway. It also has a one storey passenger terminal that can accommodate 220 passengers at a time. The passenger terminal houses bank, restaurants, shops, worship compartments and offices.

The airport can accommodate four aircrafts at the same time.Reporter was told by the acting manager of the airport, Mesfine Hailemikael, that the new airport can land aircraft as big as Boeing B737 Jetliner. Boeing B737 Jetliner is the aircraft ET uses for regional routes.

The terminal was built by Varnero the renowned Italian Construction firm. Nonetheless, the runway and apron was constructed by Yirgalem Construction.

Work on the airport was commenced on 2009 and was scheduled for completion for 2012. Mesfin said the delay has occurred due to shortage of construction materials. According to Mesfin, the airport meets international standards. He added, business people will be able to transport their products and raw materials to their destined markets.

According to Reporter the airport will handle Jimma-Addis, Jimma-Gambela, Jimma-Assosa and Jimma -Arba Minch flights. It will also play a vital role in boosting Jimma’s local tourism as the town is a historical town. The tourist attraction sites are Jimma are mainly the Abba Jiffar palace and Aweto Park. The city is also known for its coffee production.
