Haile Mariam Stressed for Improved Manufacturing and Export Performance

Prime Minister Haile Marial Dessalegn presented the nine months government performance report on Thursday, April 24, 2014 to the Ethiopian Parliament. His report, he has stressed the manufacturing and export sectors should improve their performances.

Haile Mariam has announced the nation is making a progress in different areas and stated figures. He added the country’s income from export declined because of the fall in prices of coffee, gold, live animals and meat & meat products.

The Primer told MPs that at the end of the fiscal year, he expects a 11.3 percent real GDP growth. He also reflected that the anticipated growth in the agriculture, industry and service sector is 8.7 percent, 21.4 percent and 10.5 percent respectively.

With regard to textile and skin and leather, Haile Mariam told the Parliament the sectors grew by 12 and 14 percent respectively.

And as to the progress of Mega projects, Haile Mariam told the House 31 percent of the Grand Renaissance Dam has been completed thus far and that it will start generating electricity by the next year.

Moving to the other Hydro Electric Power project, Gilgel Gibe III, Haile Mariam reported to the House that the Dam will start generating electric power in the coming Ethiopian year. He added 84 percent of the project has been completed thus far. He also assured the House other wind and hydro electric power projects are going well accoding to their respective schedules.

Probing to the economy, Haile Mariam explained to the MPs that his government has taken measures to make sure the inflation rate stays at 7.5 percent.

According to Haile Mariam, the current fiscal year is also witnessing community mobilization for developmental activities. And to achieve sustainable agricultural production, the national is doing much in developing natural resource and irrigation.

Commenting on the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), Haile Mariam stressed that there is the need to speed up its implementation because it is the focal point in boosting sectors that are not performing well. He added there is the need to give more attention in the remaining period of the GTP as to improving telecommunication, energy supply and other basic service providing sectors.

The Premier was asked if the nation will effectively attain the goals that are set by the GTP. And giving reply to this, he said there are sectors that are showing a record of steady growth and outdo the set goals. He further noted that there are sectors on the other hand that are not doing as per the set goals and that all that can be done with regard to them is exert utmost efforts to meet the goals or if failure comes take lessons from them for the next phase of the GTP.

As to the sugar mill projects, Haile Mariam told the House there was a delay because of financial constrains. Yet the projects are at a better status now for it was able to find another financial means. He also added seven of the projects will start production by the end of the GTP period.
