Ethiopia: LIDI to build Common Waste Disposal System for Tanneries

lidiThe Leather Industry Development Institute (LIDI) is to build a common waste disposal system for tanneries in Ethiopia in Modjo town, 71 km from Addis Abeba, according to Fortune.

Construction on the US$ 42 million Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) is expected to begin in two weeks time.

Financing for the project is could cost over , says Berhanu Nigus, coordinator of the Production & Productivity Sector at the Institute.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), which has helped in the pre feasibility study of the project could finance the project, otherwise, the LIDI is confident that the Ethiopian government will complete the project on its own, according to Berhanu Nigus, coordinator of the Production & Productivity Sector at the Institute.

After the completion of the common waste disposal system, the next step will be establishing an industrial zone for leather factories, according to Berhanu. The tanneries will move to the zone voluntarily. Companies who which to stay where they are will be required to build their own waste treatment systems, Berhanu said.
