Adet Agricultural Research Center to Introduce Improved Bread Wheat Varieties

The Adet Agricultural Research Center is set to introduce two improved high yield bread wheat varieties to farmers in Amhara State.

Dr. Tesfaye Feyesa, Director of the Center said, the Center will introduce the new varieties to farmers at the trial site in Gozamina Woreda in East Gojjam Zone.

The new varieties, namely Tay and Gasay, provide over 40 quintals yield per hectare on average. The new varieties are resistant to drought and diseases, in particular the yellow wheat rust, the main wheat disease in the country which causes huge production losses, according to Ethiopian News Agency.

Farmers in Farta and Debre-Elias woredas in South Gondar and East Gojjam Zones have already started to grow these varieties.

The Adet Agricultural Research Center was established in 1986 following an agreement between Institute of Agricultural Research and European Economic commission.

With its main research station and office based at Adet, the center has two sub centers in Debre-tabore and Finote-selam and seven trial sites in Woramit, Woreta, Motta, Bichena, Anjenj, Geray and Chagnie.

So far the center has released 40 improved varieties of field pea, bread wheat, durum wheat, barley, triticale, rice, faba bean, teff, linseed, finger millet, potato and sweet potato, among others.
