Ethiopian Ministry of Culture & Tourism Unveiled a New Draft Standard for Hotels

The Ethiopian Ministry of Culture & Tourism (MoCT) has unvield a new draft directive to  govern the standards of hotels and lodges. The latest draft document comes two years after the ministry suspended earlier standards whic failed to garner the approval of stakeholders of the hospitality industry.

The draft standard is prepared by the Scotland based company, Dunira Strategy. Dunira Strategy was awared the contract through an international bid two years ago.

 

“The previous standard failed because most of the hotels complained that they were not informed prior to the approval of the standard,” Melaku Alamirew, public relations officer with the Ministry, told Fortune.

According to the new standard, hotels are to be classified into seven categories; basic hotels, one-star, two-star, three-star, four-star, five-star and five-star-deluxe. The draft standard has been sent to stakeholders in the hotel sector for consultation. The Addis Abeba Hotel Owners Association has already submitted its comments on the draft standard.
