New Strategy Drafted for Registration of Expats Housing Program

The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the Ministry of Urban Development & Construction, and  Commercial Bank of Ethiopia , are finalizing a new housing registration strategy for Ethiopian expats.

The move was following problems during the registration period which ran from 12-23 August, 2013 marked by numerous challenges, such as lack of guidelines to identify eligible expats for the housing program.

The draft strategy is expected to set out clear criteria for eligibility, remove double registration issues and identify those who are avoiding paying in foreign currency. Moreover, it will enable expats to register in embassies and consulates located in there residence, Fortune reported citing an official from the Diaspora Affairs desk at the Ministry of Foreign Affair.

During the registration which ended last Friday,  expats could either register in person, or register through their legal representative in Ethiopia.

Expat registrants are required a monthly deposit of US$145 for a one-bedroom, US$223 for a two-bedroom and US$344 for a three-bedroom apartment units.
