Hawass to Build Modern City Hall

Hawassa City Administration is building  new city hall at a cost of 265 million Ethiopian birr.

The city hall is the latest in a series of major projects launched by the city recently, including a 170 million birr road building program, announced in April.

“The new building is modern and will accommodate all the different sectors. We expect it to be ready in two years’ time,” said Yonas Yosef, Mayor of Hawassa.

The City has started building cobblestone roads and flood canals, upgrade gravel roads to asphalt and installing street lighting and traffic signs. The City has allocated more than 60 million birr to build 25km of cobblestone roads in the town.

The City is also resurfacing gravel roads with asphalt, at a cost of 47 million birr. 30 million birr has been allocated for the installation of new street light posts and 26 million is being spent on construction of new flood canals.

The City's tax revenue have nearly doubled in the past fiscal year, according to the Yonas. The City has collected 400 million birr in the first half of the 2012/13 fiscal year.
