Ethiopia Expanding Biofertilizer Use

Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) said it is expanding biofertilizer technology in Ethiopia.

Soil and Water Research Directorate Director with Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research , Doctor Tolossa Debele, told Walta Information Center, the new technology would enable to double pulse production.

The new biofertilizer technology has a significant contribution in maintaining soil fertility and natural resources as well as replacing Urea fertilizer, he said.

Biofertilizer technology, implemented at a pilot level in Arsi, East and North Shoa increased bean and soyabean productivity to 35 quintals per hectare on average from 15 quintals in the past, according to Tolossa.

The institute is also planning to introduce biofertilizer technology to 10,000 farmers this meher production season.
