Compressed Earth Block (CEB), a new way of making block was introduced to the Ethiopia at a workshop on alternative construction materials organized by the American Cement Institute (ACI) Ethiopian Chapter on April 4, 2013  at the Hilton Hotel.

Compressed Earth Block is said to be made of different type of materials. The material is not usually favored by constructors because it is thought that it is not water resistant.

It was explained at the workshop that if the material is manufactured with precision, CEB is as good as other materials. The raw materials used in the production of the block are easily accessible and cost effective.

“There is a lack of high performance concrete on the market” Addis Ababa City Roads Authority Director Fekadu Haile said. He also underlined the need for quality control manuals for production companies.

The half day workshop has drawn several participants form the construction industry. Other ACI member companies has also presented different kinds of construction systems and materials,including prefabricated concrete system for housing and public buildings in Ethiopia and Portland Limestone Cement properties and application.
