Aksher Ethiopia Establishing Animal By-product Processing Plant

Aksher Ethiopia, a Turkish investors owned company is establishing an animal by-product processing plant and abattoir at a cost of 196 million Birr in Ethiopia.

The animal by-product processing plant will be erected on a 2,300sqm plot of land located in Lome Wereda, near Modjo town, while additional 2000 sqm of land will be used to construct abattoir.

The company acquired the land from the government on a 40 year lease agreement. The processing plant will collect animal by products from abattoirs throughout Ethiopia, including, Hawassa, Jimma, Dire Dawa, Harar, Mekelle, Bahir Dar, Gonder, Dessie and other towns.

Construction of the plant started five months ago, according to Nigatu Brehanu, coordinator for the company, and so far, residential quarters, office buildings and water treatment facilities have been completed. The premises will include weighing facilities for the livestock and a quarantine, where the animals will be kept before slaughter.

Construction is expected to be completed within the comming two months as the company is using prefabricated parts imported form UAE and Turkey, according to Nigatu Brehanu, coordinator for Aksher.

Aksher has been investing in Ethiopia since 2008 in Dukem town, in the Oromia Special Zone, Processing animal by-products.

Once complete, its latest facility will have a capacity to slaughter 2,500 to 3,000 goats a day, and 200 to 250 cattle, according to Nigatu.
