Horticulture Exhibition Opens in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA) launched the 5th International Horti-Flora 2013 Exhibition at the Millennium Hall  on March 20 in Addis Ababa.

Association President Zelalem Melese said, the exhibition is a good platform to create market linkage, exchange ideas and develop new trends as well as discuss challenges and opportunities in the horticulture industry.

“This year, we would like to use the occasion to celebrate our successes and the growth that the industry has made in such a short span of time. Most of the credit goes to the government for its leadership in exploring market opportunities locally and at the international level as well. In the past two years, we have made great stride in the industry in terms of expanding the sub-sector,” Zelalem said.

Zelalem also mentioned high air freight cost, access to land for expansion and new comers, lack of understanding in the industry in terms of relevant incentives in the new investment law as challenges in sustaining existing investments and attracting new ones to make the country the leading horticulture hub in Africa.

Industry Minister Mekonnen Manyazewal on his part said horticulture sector is emerging with great potential though much remains to be done in diversifying and attracting investment of both local and foreign investors.

Both Ethiopian and foreign exhibitors are displaying their produce at the two-day exhibition.
