The Ethiopian Sugar Corporation announced the new sugar production plant at Wonji will start production in the coming month. According to Abay Tsehaye, Director General of Ethiopian Sugar Corporation, the 3 billion birr sugar production plant being constructed in Oromia Region is now almost completed 97 per cent of the work being already complete. Accordingly, the factory will begin trial production in the coming month.
The new sugar factory will have a capacity to crash more than 6000 tonnes of sugarcane and tp produce 7000 quintal of sugar a day when the construction is completed and the factory goes operational.
According to Abay, the sugar factory will contribute in avoiding the significant amount of foreign exchange spent in importing sugar in addition to fulfilling local demands.
The factory also have a 20,000ha sugarcane plantation. Construction of the factory has created over 3,000 jobs. When the factory starts production, it will create 400 permanent jobs.
